DIMAPUR, JULY 31 (MExN): The mid-term meeting of the Phomching Area Students’ Union (PASU) was held on July 25 at Phomching Headquarters. In the meeting the students’ body resolved to restrengthen its fight against the menace of opium and the lack of transparency in the utilization of funds.
A statement issued by the Vice President P Bennang Wangsha and General Secretary J Gojonn Konyak, expressed its displeasure over the handling of huge amounts of funds that came for the development of the area through various channels.
As an apex students’ body of the region, the office bearers of PASU had visited various institutions in Phomching town where it was found that the educational institutions were not up to the mark, it was stated. Not only were there only a few teachers present in both GMS and GPS, but the first chapter of important subjects like Math and Science for Class 8 were also not covered yet.
Moreover, the body was displeased to find that the government staff of Phomching Headquarter at SDO (Civil) were absent from duty even at the time of meeting of the students’ body. The release further added that government buildings are now surrounded by jungles and not a single window pane is intact in the building, where valuable equipment such as computers are locked inside. The body warned the government staff that failure to be regular at work would “force the union to take its own course of action.”
With regard to opium, it was decided by the union that force would “only create rebellious mindset in the minds of the users instead of complying with it.” In this regard, with valuable aid from the MLA 44 A/C, it was decided to set up a detoxification centre for opium addicts of the areas at Phomching town.
