Pig slaughter, trade banned in Sechü Zubza & Viswema

Kohima, June 27 (MExN): The Deputy Commissioner of Kohima has issued containment orders following the detection of African Swine Fever (ASF) in two villages, Sechü Zubza and Viswema, with immediate restrictions placed on pig movement and related activities to prevent further spread of the disease.

In a notification issued by the Deputy Commissioner, the villages of Sechü Zubza and Viswema have been declared Infected Zones, while a Surveillance Zone has been established around a 10-kilometre radius of the affected areas (excluding the 1-kilometre infected perimeter).

The order was issued in response to a communication from the Chief Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services Officer dated June 21, confirming the ASF outbreak.

As part of the containment measures, the district administration has announced a complete ban on the slaughter of pigs, import and export of pigs and piglets, and transportation of pigs and pork products within both the infected and surveillance zones.

“These steps are being enforced to curb the spread of ASF and to safeguard the health of livestock in the region,” the notification stated, urging residents of the affected areas to fully comply with the containment protocols until further orders are issued by the competent authority.

African Swine Fever is a highly contagious viral disease affecting domestic and wild pigs, with a high mortality rate but no known cure or vaccine. While it poses no threat to human health, it can have devastating impacts on the pig-rearing economy.
