Peren, February 28 (MExN): The piggery cluster promoted under North East Rural Livelihood Project (NERLP) in Peren district launched its first sale of pork on February 26. It was inaugurated by Peter Lichamo, Deputy Commissioner of Peren.
NERLP is implemented in Nagaland in the two districts of Peren and Tuensang under Ministry of DoNER, Government of India, supported by World Bank. Its objective is to improve rural livelihoods, especially that of women and unemployed youths and the most disadvantaged in the project implementing states, according to a press release from District Project Manager, NERLP Peren.
The project to improve the rural livelihood through promotion of piggery as one of the livelihood options in Peren district promoted 150 households covering five villages under Six Self Help Group Village Federation. The project’s objective is to promote quality breeding units to supply quality piglet and produce quality pork for marketing and create provision for credit linkage for promoting piggery as a livelihood option.
Earlier, the Deputy Commissioner of Peren expressed happiness that the pork which the Nagas love to consume had made positive impact in the district. He encouraged the community to carry forward the new learning and make it a model for people in the other parts of the district and the State.
The District Project Manager of NERLP Peren, Ruuvilie Kotsu expressed pride that through the active participation of the community, the first sale of 1000 kgs of live weight pig was made in Punglwa village. He also highlighted that pork meat of 300 pigs will be ready for sale in the market within March 2016.
The launching programme was chaired by Heirangheing, Block Project Coordinator, Peren Block of NERLP, welcome address was delivered by Secretary, Self Help Group Village Federation Punglwa Sector B, and Piggery Cluster Committee Secretary of Punglwa Sector B village shared the piggery cluster story. State Coordinator of NERLP also delivered a brief speech.
