Kohima, March 9 (MExN): Women from different walks of life in Pfutsero Town gathered at Chakhesang Mission Centre Church to observe International Women’s Day 2016, organized by the Chakhesang Women Welfare Society Pfutsero on March 8.
The programme gave special attention to young mothers of different churches, higher secondary and high school girls from all the educational institutions.
With the theme “Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step it up for Gender Equality,” Velasa Nakro, Registrar, Cooperative Societies, Government of Nagaland, who graced the occasion as chief guest, said there is nothing women cannot do what is doable by men. He went on to say that the contribution of women towards economic progress cannot be ignored.
“Our tradition does not permit women equal opportunities but with advancement that tradition is not applicable anymore,” he stated.
Vechisalu Nukhu, Additional Secretary to the Government of Nagaland, in her guest of honor speech deliberated on the agenda of the 2030 goals. She asserted that women should be ready to contest in the state general elections. However, she added, discussion on gender equality cannot take place without the contribution and participation of men. Right from the creation story, God never made men and women different but he created both to complement each other, she stated.
Additional sessions on topics such as “Quality Education towards Socio-political participation for Gender Equality” and “Building Skills for Economic Progress” were conducted, where Vechisalu Nukhu and Rozelle Mero, MD, The People Channel, were the resource persons.
In her message to the young women, Rozelle Mero stated that from early stage of a person’s life, it is very essential to develop skills, nurture them, and get passionate about them.
“Naga people should not be terrified of the Math and Science subjects because those are mandatory for any kind of learning,” she said. “Women should become carpenters, masons and plumbers because they are not just men’s thing,” she added.
Vechulo-u Kanuo, Executive Director, Chakhesang Women Welfare Society, on behalf of the whole team, expressed gratitude to everyone who attended the programme, which was one of the biggest events organized in the town for women.
