Pochury students’ appeal CM for EAC HQ

Dimapur, September 15 (MExN): Citing regional disparities and underdevelopment, the Pochury students’ community today appealed to the Chief Minister to upgrade the Meluri HQ SDO (C) to ADC HQ.

A letter addressed to the CM by the Pochury Students’ Union president Alung K Trakha mentioned that several representations and pleas to the state government have been made. However, these appeals have been ignored time and again despite assurances.

The PSU informed the CM that a vast majority of the Pochury people are educationally and economically backward. Transportation facilities are almost negligible in most of the about 29 villages (and three upcoming “towns”). It is a huge burden upon the people both financially and physically to reach the district HQ for various official works, the PSU stated.

The union also mentioned that the Pochury people inhabit Meluri sub-division under Phek district. They are a total population of about 18, 413 as on March 1, 2001. The total geographical area of the area is 850 square kilometers which is 41.95% of the total Phek district area, it stated. Further, the union informed the CM that the sub-division, with about 29 villages and three upcoming “towns” is divided into two administrative circles viz., Meluri circle under SDO (C) and Meluri-Phokhungri circle under EAC Phokhungri. “he vast geographical expanse  with many villages in far-flung areas is covered by the two mentioned circles which is a hindrance for carrying out various administrative works smoothly” the students’ observed.
