Jakhama, December 3 (MExN): Under the theme ‘Igniting Young Minds through Clean Election,’ the Department of Political Science, St. Joseph’s College, Jakhama held its first Pol-Expo 2017 in partnership with the office of the Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer, Kohima on November 30.
Dr. Hovithal Sothu, Deputy Director, ATI in the inaugural session shared on the need for clean election in India and eradication of money power which rules over society, according to a press release received here. He particularly pointed out the fact of Nagaland being a Christian dominated state.
Advising the students to keep in mind that youths should be the ambassadors of change, he also stressed on the need of knowing whom to elect as their representatives.
“As a responsible youth one should be futuristic and must know how to choose an honest, God fearing right leader who can do justice to the society,” Hovithal stated, while reminding that change starts from self and that youth should be role models in making a difference in the society.
He emphasised that youths should teach and spread the message of Clean Election Campaign to the ignorant and help in eradication of corruption, money power and treat such activities as crime for better tomorrow.
“Vote is not a cheap sellable commodity but a highly valued price tag,” he asserted. The speaker maintained that the universal adult franchise, a constitutional right on the principles of one person, one vote, should not be allowed to be decided by others.
The session was followed by various competitions such as debate, poster and slogan making, quiz, creative expression, jam and cosplay in connection with the theme. The students debated on the topic ‘Clean Election Campaign, A Good Initiative for a Clean Nagaland’.
The Pol-Expo will continue to be celebrated annually by the Department of Political Science with a motive to train young minds, the release informed. The inaugural session was chaired by Kukhrunehu Sapuh, while welcome address was delivered by Dihe Mao, HOD Political Science.
