Police dept biggest govt employee in Nagaland

The police department is one of the biggest government employees in the state government. The police population as on January 1, 2009, stands at 23,558, according to the annual administrative report of the Home department.

“The state is insurgency affected area for which the policemen’s task is to maintain law and order and keeping public peace and also providing safety to public security of life and property of the citizens,” the report states adding, “thus, the state police force are mostly deployed for general duties/security duties of VVIPs and VIPs, protection and security of vital installation in the state.”

The report said the NAP, IR battalions are mostly deployed as Static Guard and for operational duties. The NAP has 75 outposts spread all over the districts in the state. Besides these static duties, the five NAP (IR) battalions are deployed constantly in the trouble areas of the state whenever the service of IR battalions are required to prevent any untoward incidents in the state. Apart from operational and static duties, both the DEF/NAP and IR battalions are used in ROP duties for safety and security of VVIPs, the report said.

The state police also provide highway patrolling for the protection and safety of road users, the report stated, adding that the introduction of highway patrolling by the police department had reduced highway robbery to a large extent and “so far there is no serious highway robbery in the state”. The report also mentioned the performance of the NAP battalions deployed outside the state as “highly commendable”.
