The Police are narrowing down suspects in a major high profile burglary involving a government office in Kohima.
After a burglary was reported to have occurred either on the night of June 2 or early morning June 3 at the Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) Complex involving a large amount of money, the police formed a 7-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the case, a police officer revealed when The Morung Express recently enquired.
In present times although, CCTV surveillance can be a crucial tool for investigation, the team is however devising other methods to provide leads to the case.
Investigation is going on and some people, particularly staff of the KMC are being questioned and we are collecting their statements, the police said.
Here, the SIT team is said to be questioning staff on a daily basis and narrowing down on suspects.
The police clarified that all those being questioned are not because they are suspects but being interrogated to provide leads to the case.
An employee of the KMC also informed that their contacts and addresses including those working in the Kohima Smart City Development Limited (KSCDL) have been collected by police and some of them have been questioned.
"After the robbery, we have come back to normal working on a daily basis."
The employee further revealed that they are to receive last month's salary and responded that they receive their salaries in cash rather than in their bank account.
When asked about how many employees come to the office on a daily basis, the employee said that it was not just administerial or in-house staffs but those that comes on different shifts of the day.
Interrogation, statement of staffs, ascertaining bank transactions among others are some efforts that the police are undertaking and the police remains positive of cracking the case soon.
This will also provide leads on the exact amount that has been stolen despite speculations that it is close to Rs. 1 crore.
After the burglary, the KMC soon filed a First Information Report (FIR) and issued a statement extending full cooperation to the investigating authorities to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice at the earliest.
The Council further said it has constituted an Internal Assessment Committee to review office procedures, identify any structural lapses or vulnerabilities, and recommend measures to strengthen internal security.
