Zunheboto, October 19 (MExN): District Health Society, Zunheboto in collaboration with National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP) held a seminar for police personnel at Police Station, Zunheboto on October 19. 


Dr H Hotokhu Chishi, Additional Director, Dental, Health and Family Welfare, Kohima was the resource person.
Speaking at the programme, he said that tobacco contributes to most of the leading causes of death in the world. Tobacco use leads most commonly to diseases affecting the heart, liver and lungs. He highlighted about its various health effects and elaborated about the risk factor and consequences of its use.


Dr Chishi encouraged the participants to do away with the use of tobacco and motivated the participants to be role models.


He added that globally, 10 million people die every year due to tobacco use and in India 1 million people die every year, 300 Indians die every day due to tobacco use and 40% of all cancer in India is due to tobacco use.


90% of oral cancer is due to tobacco use. He further elaborated about the COTPA 2003 Act and gave detailed presentation about Section IV to IX. He encouraged police personnel to create awareness before enforcement drive.
Vote of thanks was delivered by Dr K Akaho Sema, District Nodal Officer (NTCP), Deputy CMO, Zunheboto. A song was presented by students of Cornerstone Higher Secondary School and Dr Aron Sema, DTO chaired the programme. A pledge on anti-tobacco was also taken during the programme and a short documentary on harmful effects of tobacco was shown. The workshop was attended by Additional Director, DH &FW, Kohima; CMO; Deputy CMO; DTO; SDPO; Dental Surgeon, DH; OC; DPM; medical staff and police personnel.
