Political violence a serious threat to legitimacy of State elections: NBCC

DIMAPUR, FEBRUARY 19 (MExN): The Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) on Monday expressed concern that political violence poses a serious threat to the legitimacy of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly election.  

Getting vocal on the pre-poll violence gripping different pockets of the state, including life bids, the NBCC denounced in the strongest term, the alleged assassination bid against intending candidates to the NLA election from Mokokchung and Wokha districts.  

On February 16, in a suspected life bid, some unidentified gunmen fired shots at a shop where NPP candidate from 28 Koridang Assembly Constituency, T Chalukumba Ao was present.  

Then on February 17, BJP candidate from 40 Bhandari A/C, Mmhonlumo Kikon was attacked near Yimpang village, Wokha distirct. The BJP Nagaland had alleged the incident as an assassination attempt. On the night of February 17, three women in Tuli A/C were blindfolded and beaten by village youth.  

In this connection, NBCC clean election campaign convener, Rev Dr Mar Atsongchanger has called upon all political parties, police and government for utmost vigilance and to ensure that political tensions are kept in check.  

The NBCC also urged all concerned to maintain calm and work together to prevent further escalation of violence. It further called upon all believers to uphold for “our candidates for God’s protection and a fair and just electoral process.”
