Political will, stakeholder’s participation need of the hour to achieve SDGs

UNDP can provide technical assistance on govt demand

  Our Correspondent Kohima | November 14   A two day workshop for building capacities for taking forward Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Nagaland, which concluded here today called for political will and active participation of stakeholders to achieve 17 agendas of SDGs in Nagaland.   Minister for Planning & Coordination, Neiba Kronu stressed on the need put a concerted effort to achieve the SDGs goals in order to take the people forward with the rest of the world. Stating that land issue has become a stumbling block to many projects on several occasions in the state, he stressed on the need to address this problem at the earliest.   He informed that the state is going to have its own a land laws and the land revenue department is working on it. Referring to state’s huge potentials in agri and allied sector, he stressed on the need to do crop zoning in the entire district of the state. He added that road and power generation needs due attention.   Kronu said that a time has come to simply bring out clarity on what ground the state is going to do so that the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will come forward to support the state in achieving SDGs.   Nagaland Chief Secretary R. Binchilo Thong said that the active participation of all the stakeholders will help state achieve the SDGs agenda.   “We need resources to achieve our goals,” he said adding that even though the state may have good plan and policy but such goals cannot be achieved without resources.   V. Kezo, OSD finance department made a presentation on financing planning and resources while John Borgoyary, Regional Head, NER, UNDP communicated “Way forward” for SDG implementation in Nagaland.   Borgoyary stressed on finalization of the mapping exercise, action plan preparation & road map for next 3 years, 7 years and 15 years; capacity building state level officers, District, Block Level Officers/Village Councils/MLA’s /CBO/FBOs etc, inclusion of all sectors in the planning, implementation and monitoring exercise, creation of SDGs Cell to fast track SDG Agenda at all levels etc.   He also dwelt on the need to encourage business fraternity to invest in sectors where there are huge investment opportunities and at the same time revive informal economy. He cited instance like the bamboo, agriculture, tourism sector etc.   Mallika Adhikari, MSME specialist UNDP assured that the UNDP will provide technical support to the best of its ability.   The workshop was organized by state’s planning & coordination department in collaboration with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
