Poll candidate makes good on campaign pledge despite losing

TENING, JUNE 4 (MExN): Living up to an election campaign pledge to assist students from economically marginalized background, a former poll candidate of the Nagaland Assembly handed away financial assistance to meritorious students, who cleared the HSLC exams 2023, from Peren district.  

According to a press release, Dr Tumde Newme, who contested as an Independent candidate from the 6 Tening seat, fulfilled his promise by awarding monetary awards to 45 deserving students from the Zeme, Liangmai and Kuki communities. The event was held at Dr Newme’s residence in Jalukie on June 2. 

“Despite not winning the election, Dr. Newme upheld his steadfastness by awarding monetary assistance to deserving candidates,” the release said, while stating the cash incentive was intended to assist the students to further their academic career. An entrepreneur by profession, Dr Newme was a former President of the Zeme Council, Nagaland.  

The release informed that out of the 45 students, 10 each from the Zeme, Liangmai and Kuki were selected based on academic merit alone. The 15 others were from financially disadvantaged backgrounds but who excelled in the HSLC exams and displaying potential to excel further.   

It said, “The Zeme Students' Union, Liangmai Students' Union, and Kuki Students' Organization were entrusted with the responsibility of scrutinizing the applications based on merit.”

The release further informed that the DEO-cum-Senior SDEO of Peren district and President of Zeliangrong Mipui Organization Nagaland (ZMON), Apeuna Iheilung were also in attendance. It quoted Aheilung as terming Dr Newme’s charitable act as a first of its kind in Peren and possibly in Nagaland.
