Popularizing onion cultivation among farmers of Nagaland

Dimapur, June 10 (MExN): Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP) on Onion, Department of Horticulture, SASRD, NU as a part of its mandate and to kick off its activities in the North East Region, a day-long training programme on ‘Kharif Onion Production Technology’ was conducted.  

This programme is sanctioned by ICAR-Directorate of Onion and Garlic Research, Rajgurunagar, Pune, Maharashtra to popularize onion cultivation among tribal farmers of Nagaland.  

Training on ‘Kharif Onion Production Technology’ was conducted by Dr. Shailendra S. Gadge, Senior Scientist, ICAR-DOGR and ‘Kharif Onion Protection Technology’ by Dr. Waluniba, Scientist, AICRP (VC), Nagaland Centre followed by an informative video on production technology of onion.  

The training was attended by 60 farmer participants; 22 from Hekheshe, 17 from Zhuikhu, four from Socünoma and 17 from Sirhima. This training programme was held with the aim of creating awareness on the importance and scope of onion cultivation in our region and also to identify interested farmers from each village in various pockets of Nagaland for promotion of onion cultivation in their fields.  

This is the first project on onion under Tribal Sub Plan Programme, Department of Horticulture, SASRD: NU wherein various activities will be carried out for the benefit of the tribal people for the promotion of this economically viable crop.  

Earlier, the inaugural programme was chaired by Prof. Akali Sema, Principle Investigator, TSP-Onion, and the programme was graced by the Pro-Vice Chancellor, Prof. T. Lanusosang, SASRD, NU who also encouraged the audience with his powerful speech on the importance and prospects of onion cultivation in Nagaland. The welcome address was delivered by Dean, Prof. A.K Makar, SASRD, NU.  

Brief remark was given by Dr. Shailendra S. Gadge, Senior Scientist, ICAR-DOGR and the Dr. S.P Kanaujia, Incharge, ICAR-AICRP (VC), Nagaland Centre. The vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. C.S Maiti, Associate Professor, Department of Horticulture, SASRD, NU.  

A press note stated here that the villagers expressed their heartfelt gratitude to AICRP-VC, SASRD: NU for initiating such a programme under TSP-Onion for their village and assured full cooperation for the success of the programme. The programme was coordinated by Dr. Moakala Changkija, Dr. Aastik Jha, Dr. Waluniba and Ms. Yongkongtula
