Dimapur, June 10 (MExN): A recent administrative meeting between representatives of border districts in Assam and Nagaland has highlighted a reason responsible for tensions in the Assam-Nagaland border areas, the increasing population.
Seeking to maintain peace and confidence-building in the border districts of Mokokchung (Nagaland) and Jorhat and Sivasagar (Nagaland), a coordination meeting of deputy commissioners, Superintendents of Police, border magistrates, DFOs and administrative officers of all the three districts were held at DC’s conference hall in Mokokchung on June 10.

Welcoming her counterpart from Assam, Mokokchung Deputy Commissioner Lithrongla G Chishi said ‘cordial relationship’ between the districts have helped in diffusing ‘lot of situations without further escalation’.
Lithrongla said, “The reason that disturbs the status quo in the border areas is because population increases while the land remains the same.” Challenging the members in the meeting, she said that as administrators, all parties should help and understand each other’s problems by bringing issues to a common platform. That way matters would be solved through mutual understanding enabling to maintain a peaceful atmosphere in the border areas and among the communities.
In his speech, Deputy Commissioner of Jorhat RC Jain said having a ‘good team comprising the three districts’ is important to counter situations, between the people of the three districts, which threaten. He thanked his counterpart in Mokokchung for timely help and reaction when needed.
Deputy Commissioner of Sivasager Jatindra Lahkar also spoke in the meeting. He spoke of the hardship faced by the people living in the border areas and attributed to their neglect ‘in certain ways.’ It is the duty of all in concern in the three districts to make sure that people living in border areas too enjoy the same facilities as those in other areas, DC Lahkar said.
The Assam administrators also pointed to the proliferation of illegal arms and vehicle theft in the two districts. They have requested their counterparts in Nagaland for assistance and timely reaction when such reports of illegal activities are received from their side. Superintendent of Police of Mokokchung Bendang Lemtor assured all cooperation in every possible ways in this regard.
In the meeting, it was also mentioned that driving licenses are being randomly issued to people in Assam (some even minors) especially from districts of Mokokchung and Wokha for which authorities in the districts in Nagaland were asked to check the illegal practice. The meeting also decided that border magistrates of both sides to meet monthly to discuss and check encroachment and other illegal activities in the border areas.
