Dimapur, April 14 (MExN): The Pork Butcher Union, Dimapur through a press release issued on Friday stated that “there is no point in imposing ban on free passage of the live healthy pigs to Nagaland.”
The union’s president, Shikato T Swu said that the Government of Assam through its notification has imposed temporary ban on transportation of live pigs through the State of Assam. “In such circumstances, the people of the State will be facing acute shortage due to non-arrival of the live pigs. The shortage will thus result in price escalation and also leave a great negative impact on the butches who earn their livelihood through the trade and raise their family,” Swu opined.
The live pigs are brought from the other parts of the states and cities such as Punjab, Haryana, UP, Bangalore, Hyderabad to Nagaland state which all are in a free zone, he stated. “Moreover, live pigs are not available in abundance for consumption,” he added.
The union also stated that the supply of live pigs is not restricted in Assam as “they are allowed for intra-district and inter-district transportation to help and facilitate their farmers.”
“The live pigs are not coming from Assam, its being imported to our State from other states and cities through Assam, just like transportation of other essential goods and items,” it stated reiterating “there is no point in imposing ban on free passage of the live healthy pigs to Nagaland.”
