Green-SONS, a conservation group from Wokha, today raised concerns over rampant human-elephant conflict in the district which is also home to more than two-third of Nagaland State’s elephant population.
A day after the volunteers and youths of Sanis town rescued an elephant calf, the Green-SONS called a press meet here in Dimapur. It pointed out that sagging power grid lines have not been rectified and Bagthy Village has been frequently affected, where the latest accident took place.
It may be recalled this is not the first instance of elephants getting electrocuted at the same place where on October 24, 2018, two elephants were reportedly electrocuted. The power grid lines were also the cause of forest fire which occurred this year, the members told.
Towards this end, it asked the NEEPCO, Doyang to give details on power transmission modalities and initiate mitigation measures for protection and conservation of the elephant population and also ensure safety of human habitation. It also called for insulation of elephant movement zones.
The group said that along with the masses it will take its own course of action against the agency if actions are not initiated at the earliest.
