‘Power your life’ - World Heart Day observed

Dimapur, September 30 (MExN): World Heart Day was observed in Zunheboto and Peren districts under the theme ‘Power Your Life’ on September 29.  

In Zunheboto, the District Health Society observed the day at Akuluto PHC. Prior to the observance, a seminar cum interaction session was held at Sumi Baptist Church, Akuluto Town on September 28.  

Dr. Hokugha Jakhalu, Medical Officer i/c Akuluto PHC was the resource person. He emphasised on diabetes, its risk factor and prevention control. He also highlighted about hypertension, its symptoms and treatment. Dr. Hokugha also discussed about the importance of regular physical exercise and encouraged the gathering to decrease intake of salt and oil. He further elaborated on the causes of cancer and treatment. He advised to avoid consumption of alcohol and tobacco and increase diets rich in fruits and vegetables.  

Screening camp was held on September 29 at Akuluto PHC, where 116 people were screened for Blood Sugar, 116 screened for BP, 61 screened for Blood Grouping, and 59 people were counseled for health promotion and prevention of NCD. Two persons were detected with diabetes and 55 hypertension cases were detected during the camp.

The programme in Peren district was held at CHC Jalukie. Dr. K. Limatula Ao, DVPO, NVBDCP gave a brief talk on why World Heart Day is observed and its significance. She said the aim is to inform people about cardiovascular diseases and to promote its preventive measures and to improve health globally by encouraging people to make lifestyle changes and promoting education internationally about the ways to be good to one’s heart.  

A press release from Pezanguno Celine Secü, District Media Officer, CMO Peren informed that Tguori, SDO (C), Jalukie in his speech stated that diseases can be cured and protected if one is aware and conscious. “We tend to live an unhealthy lifestyle because of our ignorance which leads to premature deaths,” he added.  

Dr. Thangmang Thomson, MD, Medical Officer, Athibung PHC, gave a talk on healthy heart, its risk factors, prevention & management. He highlighted the symptoms of heart disease, main types of heart disease, risk factors for cardiovascular diseases and its prevention.  

70 patients availed the health services provided, out of which, there were 12 diabetes and 22 hypertension cases. Apart from free health checkups, free medicines were also provided. Meanwhile, 50 persons availed counseling on health promotion and prevention of non-communicable diseases.
