Guwahati, August 6 (MExN): The Patriotic People’s Front Assam (PPFA) today expressed “shock and utter dismay” over the “unwanted diktat” imposed by a section of elements in Manipur against Irom Sharmila Chanu for her decision to end her 16-year long hunger strike.
“It is shocking that some elements of Manipur are relentlessly opposing Sharmila’s decision to end her hunger strike,” the PPFA stated in a press release.
Sharmila’s recent declaration that she would end her fast on August 9 surprised many including her supporters. Sharmila however insisted that she would continue fighting against AFSPA with other political means. She also expressed her intention to contest Manipur Assembly polls (as an independent candidate), scheduled for next year, with an aim to fight politically against the draconian laws, and to marry her fiancé, Desmond Coutinho, in the hope to lead a normal life.
Terming the opposition against Sharmila’s decision to contest elections and get married as “appalling”, the PPFA stated, “Sharmila’s decision to end her fast should be respected and nobody can come on her way for a new life.”
In this regard, the front called upon the O. Ibobi Singh led government in Imphal to ensure her protection in the backdrop of the situation and also the Manipuri civil societies to come forward and raise their voices against such elements.
