Preparation for AYO Silver Jubilee in progress

The Angami Youth Organisation (AYO), one of the apex bodies of the Angamis, will be celebrating its 25 years from November 4 to 5 at Kigwema village, for which hectic preparations are underway.  

During a press conference held at the Kholera, Kigwema on October 30, AYO officials informed that Lok Sabha MP, Neiphiu Rio will grace the celebration as the chief guest, while Dr. Vilhusa Seleyi, president APO will be the guest of honor.  

Under the theme ‘Kelhou Kevira’ (the Utopian land or land where life is good), the AYO will commemorate its 25 years on four basis - Economy, Environment, Education and Ethos - for which preliminary seminars and talks were held in the four regions of the Angami lands. “It is a celebration with a difference. It will not just be about merrymaking and feasting but we intend to make certain commitments and pledges for a better Naga society,” said Zashekhono Tetso, Secretary, Women Affairs, adding the celebration will also look back at the struggles of the AYO and acknowledge its achievements.  

“The celebration is a celebration of our work and also to foster better relationships among our people as well as Nagas. We envision to work together peacefully for the Nagas,” said Gonei-u Sirie, Convenor, Organizing Committee.  

Kezhazer Angami, Secretary, Organizing Committee gave a brief history of the formation of AYO which was formed during the turbulent times of Naga society in order to protect the people and the interest of the community. Although AYO’s works and activities are not always in the limelight, Kezhazer noted that the organization has mostly done behind the scenes for the betterment of the State capital.  

AYO president, Medo Yhokha added that the organization’s response to issues have never been on tribal lines but on the needs of the people and communities residing in the capital, with an aim to maintain peace and tranquility. The priority call of AYO is to see that Kohima is peaceful, viewed Yhokha, who also acknowledged the support and cooperation of the people in Kohima in each of AYO’s endeavors for 25 years.  

During the press conference, Neizokhotuo Belho, Convenor, Souvenir Committee informed all interested persons to contribute poems or articles either in English or Tenyidie to any of the Souvenir Committee members on or before November 15. The officials also informed that Kigwema has been chosen for the event keeping in mind that it is one of the oldest Angami villages with many villages tracing its roots to Kigwema.  

The first day of the celebration will witness unveiling of the AYO monolith at Khwemihii, speeches and exhortations by Angami leaders and organizations and performances of Angami traditions. The second day will comprise of competitions of Angami folk songs, dances, games and activities among the four regions.  

The celebration is going to be eco-friendly with most of the materials used during the celebration, environment friendly. Pledges will also be taken to address the challenges facing the community and the Naga society. Further, all the Tenyimia organizations will be participating in the celebration. Around 7000-8000 delegates are expected to attend from all the four Angami regions.
