Dimapur, March 14 (MExN): Nagaland lone Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) S Supongmeren Jamir has urged the Union Government to approve and prioritise the construction of the proposed Foothills Road (Trans–Nagaland Highway).

Raising the matter in the Lok Sabha under Rule 377, he highlighted that proposed Foothills Road, with an estimated length of about 395 km, will run along the foothills bordering Assam.

As per a press release received here, Jamir noted that the road would significantly reduce inter-districts travel time in Nagaland as it aims to enable citizens to travel across the state without repeatedly crossing interstate boundaries, resulting in enhanced connectivity and administrative accessibility.

Once completed, the highway is expected to connect 103 towns and villages directly, benefiting over 11 lakh people, he added.

The MP further pointed out that the alignment of the road will pass through eight districts - Peren, Chümoukedima, Dimapur, Niuland, Wokha, Mokokchung, Longleng, and Mon, connecting interior areas rich in natural and mineral resources with the existing National Highway and state road networks.

Jamir informed the House that Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for Phase-I, covering 180.656 km from Dimapur to Tuli across six packages, have already been submitted to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

This phase alone is estimated to cost Rs 3,284.06 crore and total estimated cost for the entire Foothills Road project stands at approximately Rs 9,000 crore, he added.

Urging the union government to consider the project favourably, Jamir said the Foothills Road has long been a “dream project” for the people of Nagaland.

Its implementation, he added, would be a major step towards strengthening regional integration and fostering economic growth in the state.
