Peren, April 17 (MExN): A Vegetable Collection Centre and Seed Bank at Nsong Town in Peren district was inaugurated on April 16 by Pro Rural to promote sustainable agriculture and support local farmers.
The programme was chaired by Environment Coordinator, Pro Rural, Tolivi N Sumi, and began with a prayer by the Associate Pastor of Nsong Town Baptist Church. Deputy Commissioner of Peren, Hiazu Meru, inaugurated the facility.
A welcome address was delivered by Kanzeirang of Nsong Town Council, followed by a folk dance by Nsong Village youth. Director of Pro Rural, Paul Lokho, delivered the keynote address, while CEO of FPO Nsong Village, Joshila Newme, spoke on Farmer Producer Organisation (FPO) activities.
Short speeches were also delivered by EAC Nsong/Tening Lesehu Meru, Programme Coordinator BfTW, and Programme Manager APPI Vikhuli Achumi.
Guest of honour Prof Dr Akali Sema highlighted the importance of research, innovation and community participation in agriculture. She emphasised the need to preserve indigenous seeds to ensure food security, protect cultural heritage and promote sustainable farming practices, and also inaugurated the Seed Bank.
DC Hiazu Meru, in his chief guest address, stressed that development must be rooted in education, health and the local economy. He called for greater focus on implementation and capacity building, and urged the community to adapt to global changes while preserving local identity.
He also raised concerns over indiscriminate land sales and emphasised the importance of protecting community resources and conserving indigenous seeds for long-term sustainability.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Agri Expert (APPI), Pro Rural, Kiusang S. Tikhir, followed by an interaction session, exhibition and sale of traditional seeds and vegetables, and a community lunch. The initiative is expected to strengthen agricultural practices and support farmers in the district.
