Process in motion: Chief Justice of India on separate high court for Nagaland

Dimapur, July 13 (MExN): A delegation from the High Court  Bar (Kohima Bench) received confirmation that the process to set up a separate High Court for Nagaland is in motion during a meeting with the Chief Justice of India in New Delhi on Tuesday.

“The CJI without any reservation conveyed to the delegation that once the positive decision of the Union Government is conveyed to his office, the office of the CJI shall immediately give effect to the separate High Court for the State of Nagaland, provided the State has the required infrastructure in place, for which he will send a team for inspection,” a press release from the Secretary, High Court Bar informed on Tuesday.

The CJI is said to have had discussions with both the Union Minister for Law & Justice and the Union Minister for Home and assured that he would follow up on the matter with the Union Ministry, according to the release. 

The delegation also visited various offices and met officials including the Registrar of the Supreme Court M Therie as well as the Secretary General of the Supreme Court who assured the delegation of his help in whatever capacity, as and when needed.

The delegation also called upon the Chairperson of the Bar Council of India and the Executive Chairperson, wherein the BCI Chairperson gave his assurance that the council would extend cooperation towards setting up a separate Bar Council once the State has the separate High Court and also to help the State set up a professional law institute.

The delegation is set to meet the Union Minister of State, PMO, in-charge of the North East on July 14, the release stated.
