Prof Gangmumei no more

Dimapur, January 5 (MExN): Member of the North East Council, Prof. Gangmumei Kamei passed away today at 8:15 am at Majorkhul in Imphal.  

Prof Kamei was the founder president of the Federal Party of Manipur. He was elected as MLA in1995 and 2001 and was Minister for Forest, Environment & Higher Education.  

Prof Kamei joined the BJP in 2012 and unsuccessfully contested the Outer Manipur Lok Sabha Constituency.    

RNPO: The Rongmei Naga People’s Organization (RNPO) has expressed shock at the sudden demise of Prof. Kamei.  

In a condolence message, the RNPO acknowledged Prof Kamei’s contribution for the Zeliangrong people and the Nagas in the fields of history and culture.    

CM: Nagaland Chief Minister TR Zeliang also mourned the demise of Prof Kamei. In a message, Zeliang recalled the “special bond” they shared and stated that he has always been impressed by Prof Kamei.  

“It was his strong desire that the Zeliangrong people, no matter where they are geographically, should be emotionally integrated as a single family, and towards this end, he did his best to bring the people together,” Zeliang shared.  

Referring to Prof Kamei as a “fount of information”, Zeliang stated that interactions with him were “invariably very educative”.  

“In his demise, the country has lost a literary luminary; the Northeast region, a true son of the soil; Manipur, an altruist social worker; the Zeliangrong people, one of its brightest and brilliant members; and I, a guiding beacon to whom I looked up,” Zeliang’s message read.  

The Chief Minister, on behalf of the people of Nagaland, extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and prayed to the Almighty to grant them solace and comfort to tide over the grief.
