Progress made in finding common grounds

The efforts of the Nagaland Government and the Eastern Naga People’s Organization (ENPO) in finding a solution to the present Tikhir-Yimchunger flare-up appears to be bearing fruit with leaders of both the contending parties entering into a dialogue today. Nagaland Commissioner TN Mannen, presently entertaining the Commission instituted to look into the Assam-Nagaland dispute in Dimapur, was hopeful that an “understanding” would be arrived at soon. 

Eastern Naga People’s Organization Vice President, Tongthan, told The Morung Express that talks were going on at the very moment when this reporter contacted him. “They are coming to an understanding,” he said, and added that the situation was returning to normalcy.    

Meanwhile, Nagaland DGP J Changkija updated that PHE Minister, P Longon, and Minister for Transport and Communication, Imtilemba Sangtam, today met Tikhirs of Shamator Village. The villagers are said to have asked for Police protection, which was complied with. Moreover, an additional company of policemen has been requisitioned in Kiphire as a precautionary measure. The company will be arriving there January 8. A platoon each has been positioned at Sikiur, Anatongre and Waphur. 

Miscreants attacked Sikiur this morning and reportedly caused injury to a woman besides burning down a house, it was informed. The DC and SP of Kiphire, who have had to travel to areas of hostility during the past few days, rushed to the spot. Police security was also provided following the incident. 

No word on the submission of firearms and handing over of the culprits responsible for an earlier killing a policeman, as against an earlier government directive, has however been received.
