Dimapur, October 8 (MExN): Sumi Kiphimi Kuqhakulu Delhi (SKKD) or Sumi Students’ Union Delhi organized Delhi Sumi Annual Fellowship cum 27th Freshers’ Social on October 6 at Emmanuel Baptist Church, Raj Niwas Marg, New Delhi. Secretary, Land Resources department, Government of Nagaland, Y Kikheto Sema (IAS) was the chief guest.
Speaking on the theme ‘Progress in Unity’, Kikheto stated, “For any society to progress in unity one has to start working from within, instead of depending on others” and “once we Naga people start working on our own instead of depending on others, the illegal immigrants will have no space to survive and will eventually exit themselves from Nagaland in search of another place to survive.”
Kikheto appreciated the students for coming in traditional attires preserving their culture and tradition, but added that culture should not just be reflected in traditional attire but the attitude, behaviors and the quality of life. In this regard he quoted Gandhi, “A nation’s culture resides in the heart and soul of its people.”
According to a press release from Hikato Yeptho, SKKD president, the chief guest further encouraged the youngsters to revive the good values taught by the forefathers like respecting elders, honesty, hard work etc. The obsolete traditional and cultural practices, he stated, should be done away with but the good values should be carried forward.
He reminded the primary focus of students studying in Delhi – academic excellence and living an exemplary life.
“After completion of studies, instead of becoming a liability for the society, become assets for the people,” he told the students.
Meanwhile, Kikheto noted that women these days are faring better than men in many aspects such as studies, offices, societies, management etc. and advocated that Naga society should give a chance to women to prove their mantle and encourage women to prepare themselves to lead our people.
While appreciating the presence of the various Naga tribal union representatives, Kikheto added that the need of an hour for the Naga people is to forgive and forget the past mistakes in order to progress in unity and work to be a better Naga/Sumi.
He also reminded the students of their role as future leaders and advised them that in order to achieve new Nagaland and become land of peace, prosperity and unity one must have a cordial relationship with one’s neighbor.
