
Kohima, June 14 (MExN): ATMA Kohima conducted district level training on ‘Prospects of Honey Bee keeping & awareness and sensitization on MAP and its importance with respect to Nagaland’ on June 14 at DAO Conference hall, Kohima.
Vizonyu Liezie, DAO & PD (ATMA) in his keynote address briefed about Honey Bee, its utility and contribution to economy. “Nagaland being a biodiversity hotspot has numerous medicinal and aromatic plants yet to be researched out. Hence, awareness and sensitization on MAP and its importance with respect to Nagaland need to be shared,” Liezie shared.
In the first technical session, Bodevi Shüya, Team member, NHBM shared on ‘The prospect of honey bee”. He said that before the introduction of scientific bee keeping, Nagaland could produce only 1100mt of honey, however with the adoption of scientific bee keeping, the production has gone up to 3000-4000mt but it is still short for marketing. Out of 100% bee population in a hive, only 14% is considered to contribute honey whereas the rest act as pollinators. He also shared that the bees need proper housing or shelter and prefer cleanliness for best sustenance and survival. Different types of bee keeping such as over ground bee keeping, underground bee keeping, stingless modified hives were deliberated to them.
In the next technical session, Keneiluo-ü Dzuvichü, team member, NBRM shared on the topic ‘Awareness and sensitization on MAP and its importance with respect to Nagaland.’ She said that Nagaland Bio Resource Mission was constituted in 2007 to achieve the objective for conservation of Bio-resource. She briefed about that the importance and conservation of Medicinal and Aromatic plants in our state as there are so many medicinal plants, however yet to know its proper benefit and uses. So far 650 identified Medicinal & Aromatic plants have been identified under Nagaland Bio Resource Mission.
Altogether 18 farmers attended the training.
