Dimapur, July 15 (MExN): Five migrant workers from Nagaland have passed away in Chennai since the beginning of 2019 alone.
This was revealed in a press statement today from the Pastor, Naga Christian Fellowship (NCF) Chennai, Wapangtoshi and Vice President of the Naga Students’ Union Chennai (NSUC), Chibenthung.
“Most of the deceased are young people, at the age of twenties. This is an alarming call to the Nagaland Government, tribe unions, churches and different NGOs based in Nagaland,” the statement noted, in the wake of the alleged murder of 22 year-old Kaboto Kiba in Chennai last week.
It may be noted that Chennai Police have arrested three persons with regard to the murder. The press statement identified the three as Jeyanta Doss (21), Ranjith (19) and Alok (19), who were reportedly “roommates of the victim.”
The deceased, hailing from Niuland, Dimapur, was buried in Chennai on July 14, with the Naga Christian Fellowship Chennai and Naga Students' Union Chennai doing the necessary formalities.
The statement meanwhile informed that many of the migrant workers from Nagaland are not registered in the Naga Christian Fellowship Chennai and the Naga Students' Union Chennai. “These two Naga organisations carry all the burdens and responsibilities of the Nagas in Chennai. In the recent tragic incidents like death, the Naga organisations in Chennai have found that mostly the unregistered members are facing more problems,” it said.
The NCF Chennai and NSUC recommended that the Nagaland Government, tribe unions, student bodies, churches and different NGOs address this “unprecedented migration of uneducated and unskilled people from Nagaland by providing them proper information about the job in the cities, the living conditions and the Naga organisations based in various cities.”
“Moreover, the agents/relatives/friends who are taking Nagas to different cities should be properly verified by the parents through concerned authority,” they added.
The organisations meanwhile stated that the two Naga organisations “with no financial help from the Naga society back at home are shouldering the responsibility of the Nagas in Chennai. Most of the time the Naga societies and the people from home contact them only when they are in need of help.”
The organisations appeal to the people in Nagaland whose children, wards, relatives, villagers, etc are staying in Chennai to ensure that they register with the NCF Chennai and the NSUC.
