PRRS & CSF kill over 3000 pigs in Mizoram

Aizawl, June 24 (NNN): At least 3099 pigs and piglets have died in Mizoram due to the outbreak of Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) and Classical Swine Fever (CSF) since March this year.   Officials of State Animal Husbandry and Veterinary department said that the diseases have been more or less contained now. They said that at least 99 pigs were identified with PRRS and about 20 pigs died last week alone. The swine diseases have gripped the entire State, they added. Lunglei district was the last to be identified with PRRS and CSF case.   About 7,035 pigs and piglets were also taken ill due to the outbreak of PRRS and CSF, officials said.   Aizawl was the hardest hit district where 1,234 pigs and piglets have died due to the swine diseases.   The first case of PRRS during the current year was identified from Zokhawthar village on March 17 and that of CSF was detected on April 13, the officials said.   The PRRS also hit Mizoram in 2013 and 2016. More than 3,000 pigs and piglets had died in 2013 and over 4,000 pigs were culled due to the outbreak of PRRS in 2016.
