PSU condemns ‘custodial death’ in Meluri

Meluri, February 19 (MExN): The Pochury Students’ Union (MSU) on Saturday expressed shock and anguish over the unfortunate incident at Meluri Police Station wherein one Türhüli Thupitor, a cadre of GPRN/NSCN was found “hanged” in his cell in the early hours of February 16.

PSU Speaker Jakob Thuu and President Müphatho Nyuthe, condemning the “custodial death” stated that the negligence of the police personnel on duty during the time of the incident is totally unprecedented.

While acknowledging the administration for the prompt action in setting up of Judicial Enquiry Commission to probe the incident, the union has appealed the commission to expedite their investigation without any fear or favour and book all individuals involved in the case and deliver befitting justice to the bereaved families for setting an exemplary deterrent.

PSU alleged that despite numerous appeals made by the Pochury CSOs to the security forces to refrain from frequent raids in the town, still they remain adamant. “The intention of the forces to create law and order problems in the town and provoke the peaceful environment on the pretext of maintaining law and order and taking advantage of the draconian law is totally absurd and unacceptable,” it said.

Stating that at a time when Nagas are expecting early solution with the signing of ceasefire agreements and on-going political negotiations with the Government of India and all the Naga political groups, “the conditions of the Pochuries seems to remain grim and a sense of insecurities prevails in our area.” It appealed the GoI and all Naga political groups to acknowledge and respect the agreements signed for peaceful coexistence.

Meanwhile, the union reminded the security forces that Pochury people are peace-loving citizens and “if they cannot respect the sentiments and cooperate with the people, we have to sever ties indefinitely to avoid misunderstanding and confrontations in the near future. We cannot accommodate and live in our land with threats and our oppressors who try to distraught the peaceful environment.”

Further, PSU conveyed condolences to the bereaved family.
