DIMAPUR, MAY 20 (MExN): Two persons, who were collecting taxes from commercial vehicles, were apprehended by the public at the Merapani-Wokha road, Doyang on May 20. According to reports from Wokha, the duo were assaulted before the police intervened and took them into custody. Two other accomplices are reported to have escaped.
But the incident did not stop there as an angry crowd later gheraoed the Wokha Police Station demanding that the duo be handed over to them. The situation calmed after the district administration and NGOs intervened.
According to a report from the Wokha police, the duo was apprehended by members of the All Commercial Vehicles Association (ACVA), Wokha District at around 5:00 pm and handed over to the police. The day’s incident was the result of the All Commercial Vehicles Association (ACVA), Wokha District responding to the frequent menace of extortion along the Merapani-Wokha road.
The report stated that one revolver along with 5 rounds and demand notes were confiscated from the possession of the duo. According to the police, they were identified as Wonthungo Ngullie and Amento Sema, both cadres of the NSCN (IM).
