The second phase of Pulse Polio immunization camp is currently underway in several parts of the country since March 11.
Taking to Twitter, the Country’s Health Minister, J P Nadda wrote: “Various initiatives & schemes launched in recent decades have resulted in substantially bringing down the infant & maternal mortality rates rolled out from time to time & we have also been able to get rid of the dreaded diseases like polio”.
In Nagaland, 2274 polio booths have been set up to administer polio drops to over 2,27,397 eligible children from 0-5 years. According to the Directorate of Health & Family Welfare, the booths were manned by 9096 health personnel and 455 supervisors along with vaccines and other logistics.
DIMAPUR: In Dimapur, 517 booths were set up to administer the polio drops. House to house polio vaccination will also be carried out the rest of the week to immunize children who were missed today.
Dr. K. Vikato Kinimi, Chief Medical Officer, Dimapur and Dr. Rebecca, District Immunization Officer, RCH/UIP in a press note has acknowledged the medical staff and volunteers for their support and especially like to extend their appreciation and gratitude to the volunteers; Anganwadi workers, Lion’s Club Dimapur, Rotary Club Dimapur, 165 Military Rangapahar, CRPF, 32 Assam Rifle, and other volunteers for their co-operation and contribution towards sustaining polio eradication from the district.
During the First Round of IPPI 2018 held in January, Dimapur District achieved 102% coverage.
In Chumukedima, the Nagaland Police Referral Hospital, Chumukedima also conducted the 2nd phase of IPPI where Dr. Adaho, CMO gave the first drops.
WOKHA: Launching the same programme at Wokha, Dr. Zathung DPO (RCH/UIP) said that a total population of 17590 (0-5 years) children in the District will be targeted for immunization, by setting up of 160 polio booths, 5 transit teams, 1 mobile team along with 30 supervisors, detailed for intensive monitoring and supervision to successfully carry out the programme. The health workers, transit team, supervisors will be visiting house to house for left outs on March 12 and 13 both at the urban and rural areas.
KIPHIRE: Dr. K. Pewezo Khalo, DPO, UIP & RCH administered the first polio drop while launching the 2nd round of Intensive Pulse Polio Immunization in Kiphire district.
In his speech, Dr. Khalo urged all the stakeholders, health workers, and volunteers to take ownership as it is everyone’s responsibility to make this programme a success for the betterment of the society. He thanked the Evangelical Union Kiphire for coming forth with much enthusiasm to assist the department in covering 13 wards of Kiphire Town.
The programme was chaired by Dr. Khelito Zhimomi, DTO Kiphire while the EU members dedicated the activity with mass prayer. The function was attended by the program officers, medical officers and staffs under CMO and Medical Superintendent Kiphire.
KOHIMA: In the state capital, as population is 270063 a target of 37808 children of five years and below are to avail polio drops. Four (2) Mobile Polio teams on IPPI would be visiting Transit points especially bus stations and taxi stands in the district for the next two days on March 12 and 13 as house to house visit.
CMO Kohima, Dr. Ritu Thurr stated that Intensified Pulse Polio Immunization (IPPI) has been a regular activity with a goal to eradicate polio in the country. India is free from polio since 2011 and that the disease has been eradicated. However, he cautioned that, India remains at high risk till the whole world is free of wild polio virus. The country would be free from Polio with collective support from the citizen.
