Pungro tense but under control

Dimapur, August 5 (MExN): Communal tension is reportedly high following the assault of two persons in Pungro town in Kiphire around 5 PM today. According to sources, volunteers of a local organization severely assaulted two persons who were traveling in a Maruti Gypsy. The vehicle was also damaged, sources said tonight.

The incident could not be confirmed from police sources at the time of filing this news report. Both the persons were reportedly assaulted at ‘Pungro junction’. The reported victims are said to have been critically injured and admitted into Kiphire Civil Hospital. Following the report of the incident, tension was said to have been heightened in the town. When contacted, deputy commissioner of Kiphire CM Tsanglao said he was yet to be aware of the reported incident. He however said that the overall ‘situation is under control.’ ‘At one point there was so much tension, but now it is now under control,’ he said over phone.

The Nagaland Government yesterday had decided that the state road show for Kiphire district scheduled to be held in Pungro town August 7-8 coinciding with the Metemneo festival will not be held. The decision was taken following reported outbreak of violence in Pungro town stemming from opposition by ‘certain sections’ from holding the event on grounds of the venue being under dispute.
