The long-dormant Ice Plant at Doyang Reservoir, with a 5 MT capacity, is finally back in focus after 13 years in ‘cold storage.’
Under the Department of Fisheries, the plant was commissioned in 2012 but has never been operational, raising concerns over wasted resources and missed opportunities.
The issue was highlighted during the District Planning & Development Board (DPDB) monthly meeting on February 11, where the Department of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources presented a report on the plant’s status.
In response, Advisor for Agriculture Mhathung Yanthan urged the department to draft a proposal for its restoration.
Taking further action, Yanthan, along with Wokha Deputy Commissioner Vineet Kumar, inspected the site on February 12.
Addressing the media, Yanthan attributed the plant’s prolonged inactivity to the lack of essential water and electricity connections, a major oversight in the Detailed Project Report (DPR).
“In the first place, the DPR should have incorporated these essential provisions, but unfortunately, they were not included. This has resulted in a great loss for the state,” he maintained.
Expressing disappointment over the years of inaction, Yanthan further called for immediate steps to operationalise the facility.
He urged the concerned departments to take swift action to revive the Ice Plant, emphasising that as the land was purchased and the infrastructure put in place, it should now be made operational.
However, Yanthan pointed out that the plant's machinery is now damaged, with many of the machines obsolete.
“Most of the machinery is damaged, and some must be replaced entirely,” he stated, stressing the urgency of addressing these issues to prevent further resource wastage.
Calling it a "significant loss," Yanthan urged the concerned departments to act swiftly in restoring the facility and making it operational for the benefit of the state and its people.
