Tuensang District Football Team clinched the title of the 23rdInter-District Football Championship, Dr. T Ao Trophy 2024, in a thrilling final match held at the Loyem Memorial Astro Turf Ground, defeating tournament favourites Peren District 2-1. The closing ceremony of the prestigious championship was attended by P. Bashang Chang, Minister of Nagaland for PWD, Housing and Mechanical Engineering, as the special guest.

Addressing the gathering, Chang commended the Nagaland Football Association (NFA) and the Tuensang District Football Association (TDFA) for their successful organization of the event, which saw participation from 16 district teams. He emphasized the importance of the tournament, noting that the Dr. T Ao Trophy holds a special place in the hearts of football enthusiasts across the state.

“This tournament is not just a competition but a platform that empowers, unites, and uplifts our communities,” Chang said, drawing a connection to Dr. T Ao, the first captain of the Indian national football team and a pioneering figure in Nagaland’s sports history. “Dr. T Ao’s legacy is a testament to the perseverance, leadership, and humility needed to reach great heights. This event celebrates his values and reminds us of the power of sport in shaping the future of our youth,” he added.

Highlighting the ongoing efforts of the state government to improve sports infrastructure, Chang acknowledged the contribution of Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, whose support enabled the development of the Loyem Memorial Astro Turf Ground in Tuensang. “Under his visionary leadership, the government is committed to setting up sports infrastructure across the state through various government schemes. We are laying the foundation for a brighter future for our young athletes,” he stated.

Chang also praised the performance of all participating teams and encouraged the young athletes to continue pursuing excellence. “To all the players, the Government of Nagaland is with you in every possible way. We believe in your potential, and we are committed to creating opportunities for you to excel at the national and international levels,” he said.

During the program, Benie M. Lamthiu, MLA and General Secretary of the Nagaland Football Association, and Roko Angami, former international football player and Director of Coaches for the NFA, also delivered short speeches, reiterating the impact of sports on youth development and community building.

A notable highlight of the closing ceremony was the grand performance titled “Jubilee” by the students of Government Higher Secondary School, Tuensang, which was met with applause from the audience. The ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks from Yangdipi, President of the Tuensang District Football Association, who expressed gratitude to the organizing committee and all stakeholders involved in making the event a success.
