‘Quality teacher education: Issues and challenges’

National seminar aims to underline sustenance of quality in B. Ed programme

A two day ICSSR sponsored National seminar on the theme “Quality teacher education: Issues and challenges of two year B. Ed programme” under the aegis of the department of Teacher Education and School of Humanities & Education, Nagaland University got underway here at Nagaland University Kohima Campus, Meriema.  

Gracing the seminar as the chief guest, Minister for School Education & SCERT Yitachu wanted to see sincerity and commitment of the teachers to bring positive change in the society. He also wished to see proper system put into place to bring quality education in the state.  

Seminar convenor Dr. M. Rajendra Nath Babu said the objective of the seminar is to create awareness on innovative teaching strategies and skills for sustenance of quality in B. Ed programme, to develop the relationship between the theory and practices in teacher education, to integrate ICT in teacher education and to know the issues and challenges of teacher education.  

He said for this seminar, it has received huge response from all over India. It got more than 125 abstract and full papers. After reviewing publication committee accepted 105 papers from presentation and publication both. Number of papers included; Nagaland- 25, Andhra Pradesh- 31. Tamil Nadu- 13, Meghalaya- 6, Telangana- 5, Assam- 4, Sikkim- 4, Madhya Pradesh- 2, Gujarat-2, Uttar Pradesh- 3, Manipur-2, Karnataka- 3, Tripura- 2 and one each from Rajasthan, Haryana and Odisha.  

“Our department is always students centered department, that’s why for the benefit of the scholars and faculty the publication committee going to publish the all accepted articles in the form of Journal as well as edited book after review of the articles,” Dr. Babu said and hoped that it will be useful for the researchers.  

“To have quality education, we need qualified and trained teachers,” said Prof. Buno Liegise, Academic & Administrative in charge, NU, Kohima Campus, Meriema.  

She was hopeful that the seminar would draw a clear road map on quality teacher education.  

Keynote address was delivered by Prof. P.A. Reddy, dean, faculty of education, SV University, AP.  

Prof. Lungsang Zeliang, HoD, Education, Nagaland University delivered welcome address.  

The inaugural function was chaired by Narola Chuba while vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Neizo-ii Mero.  

On scope of seminar, the concept note stated that education is the basic requirement for the success of democracy and progress of a country.  

The rapid changes and increased complexity of today’s world present new challenges and put new demands on our education system.  

The NCTE’s two years B.Ed programme should give the rich and in depth experiences to the student teachers to make them reflective practitioners.  

The seminar will enlighten the participants about the need and importance of quality management and functioning of the present two years B.Ed programme. It also aims at a complete development of the student teachers, particularly in knowledge and skills, in individual care of the learner and also in methods and evaluation designed to facilitate learning. It develops sound knowledge base for student teachers in content areas, develop skills of student teachers to be component enough regarding how to transfer the content material to the students of the schools meaningfully.  

“There is a need for strong linkage of the theory and practice in teacher education,” the concept note stated, adding that this seminar was designed to discuss such issues and challenges.   The seminar will go on till November 8.
