Dimapur, August 24 (MExN): A village in Tuensang district, Yakor village, today alleged that a group called Tuensang Village Citizens Union (TVCU) has issued a “quit notice” to Yakor villagers residing in Tuensang town by August 25. The village council wrote to the chief minister of Nagaland today seeking intervention into the issue.
The causes behind the “quit notice” were not clearly explained in the representation addressed to the chief minister except for the mention of a “Chendang Vs Yakor village case.” The establishment of district headquarters in Tuensang was not by an individual village or tribe but was the composition of four tribes such as the Yimchungrü, Sangtam, Khiamnungan and Chang, Yakor village council said.
“Issuing such sadistic and provocative Quite Notice to a particular village/tribe is illegal. Thus, claiming Tuensang town as the sole ownership by the TVCU and consequently keeping the law at hand is in complete contravention to public peace and tranquility. The TVCU who issued quit notice have no interest in the matter as it is not the party to the instant case.” The council referred to the “Chendang Vs Yakor village case” as a vexed issue that traces back to the early part of 1970s.
The village council has alleged that livestock were butchered, timber cut and ferried and such violence against the Yakor villagers due to the case.
“In asserting the instance of the ambush of chairman of Yakor Village Council on his way from Tuensang to Yakor and ransacking of his house at Tuensang even amounting to attempt on his personal life and on the lives of his spouse and children and of showing undue influence forbidding the representatives of Yakor village from asserting their natural, legal and ancestral rights in substantiating their stand during the latest case conducted by joint DBs court of Tuensang and Shamator, were an ice-berg reason why the instant case was destined to be transferred out of Tuensang.”
The Yakor villagers have announced to the government and the authorities that “in the event of any eventuality arising out of the instant Quit Notice or should anything happen to any members of TVCU, it would be a mere result of self-defense on provocation.”
“Beside, should any damages occurred on properties or livestock or upon lives of any of the members of Yakor village residing in Tuensang or anywhere in Nagaland, TVCU and the State government shall equally held the whole responsibilities,” the council said to the chief minister.
