Railway Protection Force seizes smuggled items and species

Maligaon, March 11 (MExN): The Railway Protection Force (RPF) of Northeast Frontier Railway recovered live tortoises, sal timbers and magazine with live ammunitions from different stations while conducting routine check. 

RPF team of Balurghat jointly with GRP/Balurghat conducted a routine check at Train no. 05421 (Malda Town-Balurghat) passenger at Balurghat Railway station on March 5. During the check they detected nine unclaimed bags in a general coach. On opening the bags, they found 12 live tortoises weighing about 124 kgs. Later the recovered tortoises were handed over to Forest Department, Balurghat (West Bengal) for further action as per wildlife act.

Acting on information RPF of Alipurduar division conducted searches at Train no. 15467 (Siliguri Jn. - Bamanhat) Passenger at Alipurduar Jn. Railway station on March 4 and 7 respectively. During the search they recovered 11 pieces of unclaimed Sal Timbers worth Rs 8000 and 17 pieces of unclaimed Sal Timbers worth Rs 20,000.00 respectively. Later the recovered sal timbers were handed over to The Range Officer, East Damonpur, Alipurduar (West Bengal) for further action. 

In another incident on March 4, 2023RPF team of Jalpaiguri road recovered one magazine with five live ammunitions of a SLR rifle at Dhupguri Railway station. After enquiry it was found that the items belong to a Sub Inspector of Punjab Police who was on election duty. The magazine and ammunitions fell from an election special train. Later the recovered items were handed over to concerned Sub Inspector of Punjab Police.

“It may be mentioned here that RPF of NF Railway keep strict vigil on transportation of smuggled goods and species of animals through trains and at stations,” Sabyasachi De, Chief Public Relations Officer, NFR stated in a press release.
