RANPO calls for peace in border areas

Dimapur, March 6 (MExN): The Ralan Aghunaga Naga Public Organisation (RANPO) today stated that the long-standing boundary issue between Nagaland and Assam remains unresolved and appealed to the public, particularly those in border areas, to exercise restraint and maintain peace.

A press statement from the RANPO said while dialogue between the two governments continues, “the matter is also currently pending before the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India, and therefore the issue continues to remain under legal and administrative consideration.”

The organisation said it was important for people living in the border areas to understand the current situation and act responsibly. It further stated that developmental activities taking place on both sides of the border are being undertaken with the approval of the respective state governments.

“RANPO would like to emphasize that the developmental activities currently taking place on both sides of the border are being carried out with prior approval and authorization from the respective State Governments,” it stated, adding that such developments are conducted within their respective administrative jurisdictions.

According to RANPO, the purpose of these initiatives is to improve infrastructure, connectivity and access to services for the people and “should not become a cause for misunderstanding, tension, or confrontation between the people of Nagaland and Assam.”

The organisation also referred to reports that some individuals from the Assam side are protesting against the village gate of Shokhevi Village, which bears the inscription “Niuland District.” According to the statement, they have reportedly warned that the gate would be removed if it is not taken down by March 7, 2026, and that the main road connecting Chungajan to Dirnapur may be blocked if their demands are not met.

In this regard, RANPO clarified that “Shokhevi Village falls under the administrative jurisdiction of Niuland District, Nagaland.”

“Therefore, the village authorities and concerned bodies have the legitimate right to erect a village gate bearing the name ‘Niuland District,’ as it lies within their administrative jurisdiction,” the organisation stated, adding that such actions are carried out in accordance with the authority vested under the district administration.

RANPO further urged people to maintain calm until the boundary issue is officially resolved.

“Until the boundary issue between Nagaland and Assam is officially resolved, the people must continue to prioritize peace, cooperation, and mutual understanding,” it stated.
