Mon, February 26 (MExN): A financial literacy camp (FLC) was held at Indoor Stadium, Tizit town on February 23, organized by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI)—banking regulatory authority, Regional office Guwahati.
The chief guest, T. RenabomoOdyuo, additional deputy commissioner Tizit sub-division,said thatmany educationally literate people in Naga community are financially illiterate. He expressed appreciation to RBI Guwahati regional office for penetrating the rural areas to organize this financial literacy camp. He opined that the Banks may evolve a new mechanismto include people from rural villages, as various schemes of mainland India may not be suitable for tribal conditions. He also advised the people that resources are high in Tizit for which one have to streamline in tapping resources and increase their income and savings as well.
Resource person, Rajesh Kamble, Lead District Officer (LDO), RBI Guwahati Regional office, spoke on areas like:
• Non-banking financial company (NBFC), that NBFC is not a bank but primarily engaged in financial activity. None of the 107 NBFCs registered with RBI Guwahati can accept deposits. (NBFCs are companies registered with Registrar of Companies and primarily engaged in financial business i.e. giving loans and advances, investments in financial instruments, insurance, hire purchase, etc.);
• Banking Ombudsman (BO), whom a customer can lodge complaint to for redressal of their grievances—deficiencies in banking service. The complaint has to applied to BO through the branch manager;
• Features of currency notes, where water mark, security thread, latent image, micro lettering, intaglio printing and fluorescence were explained.
• Exchange of notes and coins are possible at bank branches which are soiled and defective notes. None of the bank should refuse to accept small denomination notes/ or coinsat their counter. It however advised the public that “notes will not be accepted by the banks if it bears PAY/PAID/REJECT stamps, if it bears political slogans or messages, if it is deliberately cut”.
• Do’s and don’ts for fictitious offers, besides other related issues which the public need to be aware of.

Rajuselie Lhousa, District Program Coordinator NSRLM Mon, speaking in the meeting, lauded the RBI Guwahati for having come at an appropriate period to push the Tizit community forward when the CBI Branch is at its infancy stage—made functional only in 2013.
He advised the public that the confidence the CBI has on the people of Tizit area should not let go and avail maximum benefit from it. While sharing on benefits from opening a saving account, he reminded the gathering that a Saving Bank Account cannot be taken as a certificate to avail loan but as a beginning with saving. He challenged the Tizit leaders to prepare her generation for economic growth in order to attain a ‘Tizit City’ by 2050.
The main part of attraction of the day was quiz competition where every winner was awarded a ‘torch’—symbol of guide, besides acknowledging the leaders with gifts from RBI Guwahati. Interactive session was assisted by Abemo M. Murry, CBI Tizit. Leaders fromTizit town and surrounding villages like executive members of KU Tizit Unit, chairmen of village councils and Village development board secretaries, Gaonburas, women leaders from KNSK Tizit Unit and village-levelnumbering around 150 participants availed the benefit from the special program.
