RBI promotes gender equality and rights of women in Nagaland

Organised by the Reserve Bank of India, Kohima, a one-day training titled ‘Empowering Women through Financial Literacy: A Step towards Inclusive Investing,’ commemorating International Women’s Day 2024 under the theme ‘Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress’ was held at Bosco Youth Centre, Wokha on March 7. The event aimed to promote gender equality and the rights of women and girls by providing knowledge on the importance of financial literacy and fostering sound business practices and proper financing.

During the event, Paresh Chauhan, GM & Officer-in-charge of RBI Kohima, in his speech emphasised on the importance of educating individuals for proper financial management. He highlighted RBI’s celebration of Digital Payments Awareness Week and underscored precautionary measures before using net banking, cautioning against risky practices like using public WiFi for transactions to prevent phishing attempts. Additionally, Chauhan conveyed a message to women entrepreneurs regarding the availability of banking assistance and highlighted the role of CFL in imparting knowledge. He urged people to maintain good credit discipline for financial well-being.

Deputy Commissioner Wokha, Ajit Kumar Ranjan in his keynote address expressed gratitude to the Reserve Bank of India for their efforts during the event, emphasizing the pivotal role of women in driving economic activities. He highlighted Wokha’s potential as not only a land of plenty but also a land of opportunities due to its advantageous location and the hardworking people. Ranjan called for support and facilitation from the banking sector to ensure entrepreneurs receive proper banking assistance, further fostering economic growth in the region.

Thungbeni Ngullie, President of Lotha Eloe Hoho, in her speech emphasized on the challenges faced by the Lotha community in accessing loans, despite having received comprehensive skill development training. Ngullie urged upon banks to streamline loan processing procedures and empower both women and the community by employing local personnel to offer assistance with rural banking services.

Skill Development Officer Anuranjan reaffirmed the significance of offering adequate training and loan facilities to thousands of individuals, while also acknowledging the challenges encountered at banking facilities.

Later at the event, RBI and SEBI presented comprehensive presentations covering crucial topics like financial awareness messages, complaint redressal mechanisms-RBI integrated ombudsman scheme, Be-Aware Modus Operandi and Precautions to be taken against Fraudulent Transactions and Investor Awareness & Education to the participants, aiming to inform and educate them about the financial system and how to protect themselves from potential risks and fraudulent activities.

During the event, C. Yanthan, Lead District Manager at SBI, emphasized the importance of poverty alleviation and entrepreneurship development through banks and government-sponsored schemes. Poji, the District Development Manager at NABARD, discussed agriculture and Self Help Group (SHG) related banking schemes. Lothunglo Z Ezung, Centre Manager at the Centre for Financial Literacy in Wokha, highlighted common issues faced by banking customers in Nagaland. Additionally, Adv. Shanchobeni P Lotha and Adv. Jacob Kikon, panel lawyers at WDLSA, focused on gender rights and laws related to women in their speeches.

Welcome address was presented by K Samuel Liangousiam Lead District Officer, RBI Kohima and vote of thanks was delivered by Supongla, Assistant Manager, RBI Kohima.
