Kohima, March 26 (MExN): The six-day SARAS Fair 2026 was inaugurated at Khuochiezie (Local Ground), Kohima on March 26 by Metsubo Jamir, Minister for Rural Development & SIRD.
The fair is organised by the Nagaland State Rural Livelihoods Mission under the Department of Rural Development.
SARAS (Sale of Articles of Rural Artisans Society) is a platform showcasing products, skills and craftsmanship of rural artisans, with a focus on women’s contributions.
The event features participation from across the country and various districts of Nagaland, including six national participants, 23 departments and organisations, and 43 Self-Help Groups. Around 100 stalls have been set up displaying a range of products, including food items, textiles and traditional crafts. Live performances are also part of the event.
In his address, Jamir stated that the platform connects rural artisans and producers directly to markets, enabling wider outreach. He said the fair reflects the cultural heritage of Nagaland through organic products, handwoven textiles and traditional crafts.
He stated that over 1.30 lakh SHG members are contributing to rural livelihoods and community leadership. He also announced the operationalisation of a seed fund targeting 1,000 women entrepreneurs.
The Minister said the government will continue supporting rural entrepreneurs through capacity building, financial inclusion, skill development and market linkages. He added that youth skilling programmes have benefited over 9,000 youths.
The programme included an invocation by Visato Yhoshü, Pastor, Union Baptist Church, Kohima, inauguration of Skills-on-Wheels, cultural performances, and distribution of laptops and printers to BC Sakhis.
