‘Reading the past, writing the future’

NU SASRD celebrates 50th International Literacy Day  

Dimapur, September 9 (MExN): Nagaland University, School of Agricultural Sciences & Rural Development (SASRD) on September 8 celebrated the 50th International Literacy Day.  

A press release stated that to mark this celebration, an Inter-class competition was held and the participants included the batches from B. Sc. (Ag) 1st year to Ph.D. scholars with the caption ‘Reading the past, writing the future’ as the theme as per UNESCO official declaration for the year 2016.  

The programme was organised by the students’ union of SASRD. It comprised of different events such as an essay competition under the topic ‘Ethical and informed voting for all round development’ as directed by the Office of the Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer, Dimapur, followed by poetry writing, extempore, a debate under the trending issue ‘Social Networking sites and Messaging applications – a reliable guide for the society’ that concluded with a critique by Prof. R.C Gupta, Dean NU: SASRD and a drama competition on the theme of the 50th International Literacy Day.  

The panel of Judges included Dr. Pauline Alila, Associate Professor, Dr. Pankaj Kumar Shah, Assistant Professor and Moanungsang, Assistant Professor. A final remark was deliberated by Moanungsang, Assistant Professor stressing upon the importance of communal harmony through literacy. The M. Sc (Ag) 1st Years emerged as the overall champion class followed by the B. Sc. (Ag) 2nd Years.  

4Special title for the best debater was bagged by Jonah Dakho, a Ph.D. scholar and the best actor for drama was awarded to Alemshilu Longkumer of B. Sc.(Ag) 1st year.
