Coming under the heels of their major achievements in the recent Manipur State Assembly elections in March 2022, the National People’s Party (NPP) led by Conrad Sangma hopes to emulate a similar feat in Nagaland as well during next year’s election.

“We want to bring a turnaround in the peace and overall economic development of the state of Nagaland,” stated M Rameshwar Singh, NPP general secretary, in-change of Nagaland & Tripura, and MLA of Manipur during a press conference with media persons at the part’s office at Thahekhu/ Kevijau on May 14.

He went on to say that “Our vision of One Voice One Northeast, I think we are heading towards that objective and we continue to do the same within our efforts, to do the same in the upcoming elections in Nagaland.”

In regards to a question of forming alliances, Rameshwar said that, “We have a lot of room for growth so any party who shares our same vision, we are ready to align with them.”

Speaking on the party’s objective and interests to rope in interested voters, Rameshwar highlighted that the party’s focus will be on increasing the average income of each individual of the state. This, he said will be through ‘employment generation as Naga society has got many qualified educated youths who do not have a job. It is not possible for the government to provide jobs to everyone so we need to create industries; we need to create space for job opportunities.”

Enumerating that, “if the people of Nagaland give us the opportunity to be a part of the government, the first thing we would like to do is to try and provide jobs for the unemployed educated youths.”

The other objectives of the party included prioritising on providing the best healthcare system and a focus towards farmers’ output on producing organic products.

Besides these, he noted the underlying problem in the state is not due to lack of schemes but instead is due to non-implementation of schemes. Thus, asserting, “We will ensure that all the schemes and benefit of the Centre will reach Nagaland.”

Speaking on the experience that the NPP had in Manipur during the election period of that state and what it could entail for Nagaland as well, he opined “to have a more friendly fight.” Adding that, “Our idea is to remain amicable and approachable with every party as long as they share our same aims and objectives.”

Commenting on the two NPP MLAs who defected to the NDPP in 2019, Rameshwar said, “We will be more careful in selecting our candidates in terms of their loyalty and integrity to the party and in terms of their seriousness in serving the people of Nagaland.”

He concluded by asserting that, “We will be selecting the candidates very carefully this time.”
