Nagaland’s Governor Nikhil Kumar today once again reaffirmed that the DAN government recognizes the Naga political problem as the key issue for the future of the people and that it remains committed to facilitate, in all manner and ways possible, a speedy and honorable resolution of the long standing problem.

“My government reiterates its commitment to step down, if and when it is necessary, to pave the way for any alternative arrangement that may come about through a negotiated settlement,” Kumar said in his address at the first session of the 12th Nagaland Legislative Assembly here today.

Kumar further said that it was the sincere hope of his government that the various issues involved will be resolved amicably and that the Government of India and the Naga nationalist groups will work out the much awaited solution of the Naga problem sooner than later.

The Governor maintained that Nagaland as the sixteenth state of the country is marching ahead on the path of progress and prosperity, along with the rest of the nation. “Though violence and disturbed law and order conditions had impeded our progress in the past, the last one decade has seen relative peace and faster development,” he said.

Stating that Nagaland has the unique distinction of having special protection in the form of Article 371 A that grants special safeguards for its social traditions and practices, he said “these privileges along with other general protections have given us a much greater say in managing our own affairs than most other states of the Union of India.”

Welcoming all members of the August House, especially the 24 legislators who have been elected for the first time, Kumar said that he was happy and encouraged to see many young faces. “This shows our vibrant democracy in action. The fact that NPF has come back with a thumping majority is an indication of the faith reposed in the NPF led DAN government by the people of Nagaland,” he said. The Governor added that this was also an indication of the people’s endorsement of the DAN’s policy and approach towards peaceful solution of the Naga political issue and its successful implementation of its slogan “Peace for Development and Development for Peace.”

Stating that the task of building the State is not easy, as there are many challenges to be faced, he said “the need of the hour is to convert these challenges into opportunities and to take determined steps forward to achieve our destiny.”

The Governor pointed out the need to rise above parochialism and tribalism, and place our common interests and destiny above our individual or tribal interests, with a strong belief in the unity and oneness of the Naga people.

“Let us pledge ourselves to combat the forces of separatism and tribalism, and re-dedicate ourselves to work unitedly for the cause of peace, progress and prosperity, he said. “Let us utilize this massive mandate to give them back good governance, and also to bring about social harmony, peace, development and prosperity to our beloved Nagaland,” the Governor emphasized.

Later, MLA Longrineken moved motion of thanks on Governor’s address and MLA Thongwang seconded the motion. Discussion on Governor’s speech will be taken up on March 16 and 18, according to NLA Speaker Chotisuh Sazo.
