Students at Queen Mary Higher Secondary School in Mokokchung begun to empty their pocket money on Monday and Tuesday to benefit a boy whom they have never meet. All they know is that eleven year Akumdong, a student of St. Thomas Montessori School in Dimapur, is in desperate need of prayers and financial support as he is being taken care at the ICU in Apollo International Hospital, Guwahati because of a major brain tumour surgery.
A teacher working at Queen Mary Higher Secondary School informed that an announcement was made Monday morning at the school through the PA system informing about Akumdong’s condition and to collect donation for his cause.
“Following the announcement, the principal’s office was crowded because the students wanted to donate their pocket money. Some of us have to dismiss them from the office and requested the respective class teachers to collect the money. We could pull together almost thirty thousand which was handed over to Pinnacle Centre in Mokokchung,” he added. He also informed that the school does not allow the students to bring more than ten rupees as pocket money.
Akumdong, a resident of Naga Gaon Colony in Signal Basti is described by his teachers and parents as a very bright student who scored star marks. A fourth-grader at St. Thomas Montessori School could no longer attend classes due to his sickness. His father, Chubalepden describes his son as being an active and energetic boy until one morning in January this year when he suddenly fainted and that is when they started taking him around for treatment in various hospitals.
On March 17, 2017 Akumdong was operated for brain tumour at Apollo International Hospital, Guwahati and since then he is being taken care at the ICU.
For the family and relatives, their primary concern is Akumdong’s recovery, but needless to say they are in need of financial assistances. “Our relatives know that I don’t have a job but they are helping us as much as they can. But besides them, we are overwhelmed by the support from his school, individuals, NGOs, churches and other unknown donors. We are estimating that the bills for the surgery and other medical expenses will be minimum three lakhs,” his father shared while calling for more prayer and all possible help.
Besides the donation drive undertaken by the QMHSS, a similar fund drive has also been initiated by The Naga Blog, a social media platform on facebook.
