Record haul of Stolen Wheels

In one of the biggest hauls of stolen vehicles in the recent times in the Nagaland, Dimapur police during the past three weeks, seized 36 stolen vehicles from Dimapur. The Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), Dimapur, displaying to the media the recovered stolen vehicles at the DDSC stadium on Friday, said 23 persons have been arrested and have been forwarded to judicial custody.

Following the busting of a fake vehicle registration and insurance papers racket by Dimapur police on June 8 last, police stepped up vigilance to detect stolen vehicles that were with fake documents, the ASP informed. Armed with a computer software to detect stolen vehicles called “Motor Vehicle Co-ordination System” the ASP said that during the past three weeks they were able to detect and recover 19 (Mahindra) Bolero, 7 (Honda) City, 6 (Mahindra) Scorpio, 2 (Maruti) Esteem, 1 (Tata) Indica and 1 (Hyundai) Santro. Most of the vehicles originated from Delhi, Bihar and Maharashtra it was informed. One vehicle was reportedly detected from Kohima and seized. 

The said software provided by the National Crime Records Bureau, it was learned, has a record of 602500 stolen vehicles reported from all over the country. The software tallies the engine\chassis number of suspect vehicles with the ones on the registration, it was learned. It was informed that any vehicle’s engine\chassis number found not tallying with the result as shown by the software, was immediately seized. The software, in a matter of minutes, comes up with the results when the required data is fed to a computer that has the software it was learned. 

In pursuance of the case, a Special Investigation Team has been formed which is headed by the ASP of Dimapur. Also the PHQ will be giving directives soon to carry out such drives in the other districts of the state it was informed. When queried as to how the police will dispose off the recovered vehicles, the ASP replied that they have intimated all police stations to send their representatives to collect the vehicles to be forwarded to their rightful owners. 

Meanwhile the ASP has appealed to the public to be very vigilant while buying second hand cars, warning that even those who are found in possession of stolen vehicles are punishable by law.
