Recovering oral histories of Northeast India

DIMAPUR, OCTOBER 31 (MExN): A two-day national seminar on ‘Recovering the Oral Histories of Northeast India’ has begun on Wednesday at conference hall, Nagaland Bamboo Development Agency, Dimapur.

The seminar is being sponsored by Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS), Shimla in collaboration with India National Trust for Art & Cultural Heritage (INTACH), Nagaland Chapter. Director, IIAS, Shimla, Dr. Peter Ronald D’Souza said the seminar was the result of an effort to find innovative ways to deal with the forces of modernity that was affecting the traditions and histories of the people. He said the onslaught of modernity was forcing humanity into crisis and so efforts must be drawn to deal with such developments. 

Dr. D’Souza said India is the greatest repository of intangible cultural heritage and that the world required what the country has to offer.

Director, NEZCC Dimapur, Son Kamei, IPS, also spoke at the brief inaugural session. During the two-day seminar, scholars and researchers from NE states will be presenting various papers on the oral traditions in NE states.
