The police in Mon recovered two dead bodies on September 25 setting the rumour mill rolling. The deceased persons were from the Sonari town of Assam’s Charaideo district bordering Mon.

The reports of the recovery of the dead bodies had a section of the media in Assam insinuating murder and missing cash, while the preliminary police investigation has yet to find any evidence corroborating the rumor based on anecdotal accounts.

According to the Mon Police, it received an FIR on Monday morning informing of two missing persons, along with a pickup truck, from Sonari. The complaint was filed by the owner of the pickup, also from Charaideo.

The dead bodies of the missing persons and the pickup truck were found after the Mon police launched a search operation based on the complaint. A senior official of the Mon police told The Morung Express that the bodies were found some 200 feet below the road at a spot between Angjangyang and Longching before reaching Aboi from Tobu.

The look of it pointed to vehicular accident, the official said, while adding that the preliminary police inquest did not come across any evidence as to indicate foul play. A significant amount of cash was also found from the site. The official however declined to reveal the amount, while stating that the owner was also present when the crashed pickup along with the dead bodies and cash were recovered.

The deceased victims were identified as Lalit Nowholia, the driver and his handyman, Utpal Tasa. The official said that as per the account of the pickup owner, the duo’s transport routine included dropping grocery at Tobu from Sonari.

They had left for Tobu from Sonari for one such cargo drop on September 22. They were scheduled to return the next day. They were last heard at around 6:00 pm, September 23, reportedly while on their way back from Tobu. The Mon police was informed of the missing duo only on September 25 at around 7:30 am.

The police official said that investigation was on and that the bodies were transported to the Mon District Hospital for post mortem.
