Secretary, Land Resources, Y. Kikheto Sema (IAS) today asked students to be more humble as they climb the ladder of success in life and contribute their due share to the society. “The more you humble yourself, the more blessings will come your way,” he stated.
He was speaking as guest speaker at the 62nd annual session-cum-freshers’ meet of Kohima Sumi Students’ Union (KSSU) at The Heritage, Old DC Bungalow, Kohima, which was held under the theme, ‘Socio-Political Impact: Redundancy to Relevancy.’
Kikheto said entering college was only a beginning of the road to their career and that vital milestones are needed to be covered for achieving the goals ahead. He opined that Naga society has become redundant owing to countless factors and added it was time for bringing in real changes relevant to the present context. “Let us admit our shortcomings and faults and have the courage to call a spade, a spade and rectify accordingly; then only real change will take place in the society,” he stated.
He further added, “Anything more than a yes or no comes from the evil,” indicating the general tendency of Naga society deviating from the truth in any situation. Kikheto said that the Naga society has become a pretentious society where people talk and behave like they were doing the jobs and falsely claim credit for it. “We need to first change ourselves from such shameless acts.”
Talking about preserving flora and fauna, he urged upon the KSSU to learn from a host of other students and cited an example of the Angami Students’ Union, which is actively involved in environmental issues.
Kikheto also emphasized on the electioneering system and encouraged the students to go back to their respective places and propagate the critical need for cleansing election system in the state.
Speaking about shortage of teachers in rural areas, the Secretary asserted that unless the mentality towards serving in rural areas changes, there would continue to be shortages no matter how many more teachers are appointed by the government.
He further urged the students to give importance to their mother tongue which forms a part of their identity and culture.
During the programme, KSSU felicitated freshers, while the Kohima Sumi Totimi Hoho felicitated meritorious female students and successful female candidates of competitive examinations.
The students also took a pledge on clean election initiated by the NBCC in the second session.
Dr. Vinito Chishi, President, Kohima Sumi Hoho, Hekani Jakhalu, Advisor, YouthNet, Khehoshe Ayemi, Branch Manager, Impulse Marketing and James Swu, Composer & Conductor, Music Lecturer, Patkai Christian College were the panellists in the second session.
