DIMAPUR, JAN 16 (MExN): Assisted by police, the administration today evicted encroachers who had set up structures in the land of Referral Hospital, now known as Christian Institute of Health Sciences and Research (CIHSR) at 4th Mile, Dimapur. The eviction was carried out without resistance, police said.
The structures on government land, mostly pig sties and lavatories, had earlier been constructed on land inside of the wall that fences the medical facility. Some had even taken advantage of the wall by using it as a partition for adjoining rooms.
Portions of the wall had also been torn down to make accommodations. A new barricade is to come up soon.
SDO (Civil), Tarep, who was at the spot this morning, said the eviction drive was in consonance to an earlier directive issued by Dimapur Deputy Commissioner, K N Ngullie. Once the state-of-the-art hospital is operational, patients will not have to travel to Vellore for examination, the SDO said, emphasizing on the point that development would mushroom in the surrounding areas.
An official from the CIHSR said the earlier settlers would not suffer huge losses as they had constructed only makeshift structures, knowing that they would have to leave sooner or later. The evictees dismantled their structures and collected building materials for reuse.
A JCP employed to assist in the eviction works knocked down trees with ease after orders were given to do so. This was done amidst fears that the evictees may attempt to reclaim the land on the basis of plantation of the trees.
